Polyps are fleshy growths formed by the localized overgrowth of the uterine lining (endometrium). By occupying space within the uterus, they can cause problems in achieving pregnancy and maintaining it once it has occurred. In fact, while polyps may not directly prevent conception, they can lead to miscarriage. Prior to intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, normalizing the uterine environment and removing polyps is the correct approach to prevent a potential pregnancy from ending in miscarriage. However, the size and number of polyps are also significant factors at this point. When a polyp is detected or suspected, it is possible to evaluate the uterine cavity and remove the polyp simultaneously via hysteroscopy. Occasionally, these polyps may recur; the gold standard approach for management is hysteroscopy.
