Chemical pregnancy is a pathological type of pregnancy in which the gestational sac cannot be visualized on ultrasound performed 1 week or 10 days after a positive pregnancy test, and the blood pregnancy test levels begin to decline. It can be described as a type of early-stage miscarriage. The cause may be related to the embryo or the mother. The embryo attaches to the uterus but subsequently stops cell division. Genetic problems are the leading cause among factors related to the embryo. Maternal causes may include thyroid diseases, other systemic illnesses, uterine anomalies, intrauterine adhesions, or pathologies related to the fallopian tubes. After a chemical pregnancy, a detailed gynecological examination and a medicated uterine x-ray (HSG) should be performed to re-evaluate whether there is an underlying gynecological issue.
