In recent years, the number of couples benefiting from IVF treatments has been increasing gradually. A significant reason for this is the problem of being unable to conceive through natural means that couples face.
Postponing marriage or having children to later ages can lead to certain difficulties. With advancing age, the probability of conceiving decreases or becomes increasingly difficult. When couples feel ready to have children, pregnancy may not occur this time, and disappointment can arise as time passes. However, fertility potential in women can be determined in advance with the AMH test performed in the blood and the counting of follicles in the ovaries via ultrasonography.
Is It Possible to Increase Fertility Potential?
In unmarried women or married couples who do not yet have children, it is necessary to evaluate and inform the woman about her fertility potential during a gynecological examination. In fact, every woman comes to life with a predetermined egg capacity at birth. That is, the egg capacity of each individual is determined at birth while still in the mother’s womb and under the influence of genetic predispositions. However, events that occur throughout life—for example, serious diseases such as cancer, heavy treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and gynecological diseases such as endometriosis—weaken or can reduce the egg capacity.
What Precautions Should We Take Against the Decrease in Fertility Potential?
The most important things that can be done are not smoking, balanced nutrition, and weight control. The habits of the mother-to-be while in the womb, serious ailments, genetic predisposition, a diet poor in antioxidants, and obesity reduce the fertility potential in women. Although it is not possible to completely control these factors, regular annual check-ups must be performed. By not overlooking this point during annual gynecological examinations, it is possible to keep our fertility potential high and to notice and prevent a threat early if one exists.
On the other hand, a healthy pregnancy for expectant mothers and a well-monitored pregnancy under a doctor’s supervision also positively affect the future life and health of the female children to be born.
